UPDATE: Lightning strikes across the South Coast

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have had a busy night dealing with lightning strikes

It’s been a sleepless night for many on the South Coast.

The Met Office reported 35-thousand lightning strikes, most of which were over the channel.

Fire crews from West Sussex battled in extreme conditions in Elmer near Bognor to ensure all the Beach View Care Home residents were taken to safe areas.

To the west, in Chichester, lightning also struck the roof of a university building, there are no reports of injuries.

Hampshire seems to have had no incidents overnight.
