“Buriton backstories”: Wednesday, 2 April; 7:30pm in Buriton Village Hall
A group of long-standing villagers will share their recollections about growing up in the parish.
The event will give a flavour of different aspects of local life: around the home, at school, at work and at play.
Life in the years after the Second World War was quite different to that of today, getting water from a handful of outdoor taps around the village and having to trek along muddy paths on cold, wet winter nights to reach outside toilets.
Facilities at the village school were also fairly primitive and, in the days before widespread television ownership, villagers made their own entertainments – often helping to form long-lasting bonds within the community.
The event will also recall memories from the Second World War when new playmates for local children might arrive if there had been bad air-raids in Portsmouth. Safety procedures, in case of air-raid warnings, were practiced every day with all the children diving under their wooden desks for protection!
And the celebrations of VE Day will be almost exactly 80 years ago ...
Come along to this special community event – to hear about a unique period in the history of the village.
It promises to be a fascinating, first-hand trip down memory lane!
Admission is free, with a retiring collection and all are welcome.
