Murder arrests over death of toddler in Northern Ireland

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a toddler in Northern Ireland.

Police have named the girl as Tavia Michella Ximenes Da Costa, who was just 23 months old.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said it was called to a report of "the sudden death of a child" in Dungannon on Sunday morning.

Tavia - who was just weeks away from her second birthday - was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the results of a post-mortem examination, officers are treating her death as murder.

A 21-year-old woman, a woman aged 24 and a 29-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly said officers and an ambulance crew had attended after being called to the scene.

He said: "My thoughts, and sincere sympathy, are with little Tavia's family members and loved ones whose worlds have been turned upside down."

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to contact the force.
