They're calling for decisions to take into account the needs of all people after their objection to the bridge was overturned, despite it being unsuitable for people with disabilities
Arun District Council are calling for a change in planning legislation after their objection to building a new railway bridge at Barnham Station was overturned by an inspector.
Arun District Council are writing to Government to encourage a change in regulations to make it easier to ensure the needs of all are considered in planning decisions after an inspector was able to overturn their objection, despite accessibility concerns.
The council feared that the design would prevent those with disabilities, cyclists, and people with young children from crossing the railway.
However, current regulations only require it to be safe by "preventing unauthorised access and reducing the risk of accident or injury."
The inspector found no reason not to agree to the bridge, which could replace the existing Birch level crossing, except the need for ‘improvements to the design to make it easier for cyclists to use’
