A Bognor Regis driver has been banned from driving for a year after colliding with a tree in Chichester.

Lukasz Kopania crashed his Mini Cooper in Needlemakers during an early morning spin on February 20th, knocking himself unconscious. After a passer-by retrieved him from the vehicle, Kopania was hospitalised, where medics discovered cocaine and alcohol in his blood.

The driver was charged at Worthing Magistrates court last month and was issued a one-year driving ban. In court, he claimed he "could not remember driving", Roads Policing officer PC Steve Bucksey revealed.

Bucksey continued: "Through a full and thorough investigation involving witness appeals, CCTV trawls and forensic investigation, we presented this to the court where Kopania, for the first time pled guilty.

“Prior to colliding with a tree, Kopania put others in danger, swerving past innocent members of public as he drove through Chichester town centre.

“He ballooned the bend in Needlemakers and hit a tree, causing a collision that left him unconscious."

Kopania originally told police that "he was not the driver at the time". Alongside the ban, he was handed 40 hours of unpaid work and made to pay a total of £180 in fines.
