It's hoped the building could fill the town's gap in conference facilities and large events spaces

An ex-Brewers Fayre restaurant in Bognor Regis could become a "public meeting place", it's been suggested.

Councillors put forward the idea on Monday in hopes to fill the town's gap in conference facilities, large community event spaces and exhibition halls - something they add that the Royal Hall "was always intended to provide."

The suggestion was a direct rejection to a motion towards letting the building, a "value option" which was slammed by over half of the economy committee's members.

Councillor Dr James Walsh added that "it would be good to include that in a review of what could be provided there and at what cost and what time frame."

The mix of proposals for the building come after developers Whitbread dropped out "almost last minute", leaving the council responsible for the vacant site.

Other ideas put forward included demolishing the building completely and including it in future developments of the Regis car park, a plan didn't reach the same popularity as the Royal Hall approach.

Shaun Gunner slammed the plans as being "ambushed on the meeting" following a "secret discussion", which excluded conservative party members.

"We're being asked to vote for an option that's got no costings, no time-frames, and has had no work done on it whatsoever."

Arun District Council are also meeting with Arun Arts to discuss them taking over the building short term.
