Brighton women win in first match without Hope Powell

Danielle Carter scored twice and set up another as Brighton began life without Hope Powell by winning a nine-goal thriller 5-4 at West Ham.

Powell stepped down this week following the 8-0 home defeat by Tottenham on 30th October.

This week taking on West Ham, Brighton again fell behind when an attempted cross from Lisa Evans drifted into the far corner in the 3rd minute.

However, just 5 minutes later, Danielle Carter pounced on Hammers goalkeeper Sophie Hillyerd’s poor touch to equalise and then set up Veatriki Sarri to slide Brighton in front on 11 minutes.

Carter’s penalty, after Grace Fisk tripped Julia Zigiotti Olme, made it 3-1, with the Seagulls taking that lead into half time.

After the restart, an own goal from Victoria Williams gave the home side a lifeline.

Goals from Elisabeth Terland and Jorja Fox looked to have sealed a comfortable win for the visitors as Brighton took a 5-2 lead.

However, a late double from Viviane Asseyi set up a frantic finish in almost 10 minutes of time added on.

Brighton held on, however, to clinch a crucial three points with a stunning 5-4 victory.

Brighton now sit in 9th place in the WSL table, with 6 points from 6 games.
