The protest aims to 'support people being crucified by extortionate care charges'

A protest against social care charges is set to take place this Friday in Chichester, a week later than it was initially planned.

Warrior Carers Sussex's protest, now taking place on the 23rd of September, was scheduled for the 16th of September before being postponed in respect of the late Queen. The protest arose following concerns last year that found that the adult social care financial assessment process resulted in debt for some and saw others being forced to give up support they could no longer afford.

The campaign group "demand provision for one off payments" for essential equipment, such as wheelchairs, to stop care costs driving people "further into poverty". Among protesters is Sarah Welch, whose costs for her adult son with cerebral palsy rose from £37.70 to £73 each week.

A spokesperson for the Warrior Carers group described the rising charges as a "growing crisis which will deepen with rising inflation and increased energy costs".

"The council needs to recognise this and act now to support and protect disabled people in the county, not harm them further by ever-increasing charges and cuts to their services."

Earlier this year, West Sussex councillor Amanda Jupp apologised for the "anxiety and stress" that the rising costs caused, adding that "we immediately saw the problems and we acted upon it immediately".
