Consortium to tackle inactivity in Portsmouth

Portsmouth City Council is partnering with local organizations to tackle inequalities and improve health outcomes, focusing on residents in Landport and Buckland through increased physical activity and community engagement.

The council, alongside other groups, has secured funding from Sport England as part of a £250 million investment.

In the first phase, Community Coordinators will be deployed through local organizations to engage with residents and identify barriers to physical activity.

Landport and Buckland were selected for investment based on Sport England’s inactivity data and social need indicators, ensuring funds are targeted where they can have the greatest impact.

In Portsmouth, over 14,000 children and young people, along with 52,000 adults, do not meet recommended activity levels for good health.

Sport and physical activity play a crucial role in overall wellbeing. Recent figures estimate that the combined social value of physical activity, including public health savings, is worth £363 million to Portsmouth.

The initiative, involving local government, health, education, and community organizations, will initially focus on understanding obstacles to activity and building on existing community efforts.
