Five members of the public, Worthing Pub Watch and the police previously objected the bar's alcohol licence

A Worthing converted church will be transformed into gin bar after having its alcohol licence approved.

Hove's The Gin Tub will open a new bar on 10 High Street following previous objection from both the public and the police. Taking over a craft alehouse, the bar was also originally protested against by Worthing Pub watch, who have since revoked their concerns.

Following council suggestions, the Gin Tub gained its licence having agreed to reduce its opening hours from 2am at the latest to 1:30am. This includes reducing their Sunday hours to closing at midnight, instead of original proposals suggesting it could potentially be open two hours later.

The Gin Tub's Hove venue sparked controversy in 2019 as its licence was revoked after cocaine was discovered in its toilets - a fact some who objected to the plans recalled during the licensing hearing.

However, Francesca Green, the designated premises supervisor, promised that the business "had changed". Sussex Police have also requested for the bar to declare any drugs seized on a monthly basis, as well as having "an absolute zero policy towards drugs and drug misuse."

Brighton Bars Limited's director Stephen Guille assured that their "demographic is 30-somethings - certainly not youngsters. I think we're going to improve the area as opposed to be detrimental to the area."
