West Sussex County Councillor Keir Greenway is calling for action on excessive speeding in both Bersted and Bognor Regis.
Councillor Keir Greenway says “Residents are fully aware of the issue of speeding and regularly write to me about this issue. This may be about the noise generated on the North Bersted Bypass late at night, or the dangerous speeds on the likes of West Meads Drive or Shripney Road.”
Keir is appealing to Sussex Police and the Sussex Safer Road Partnership to help residents with reporting this crime by allowing reports to be made without needing a full license plate number.
Councillor Keir Greenway says “Reporting is a vital part of effective policing, but when reporting speeding via the Operation Crackdown website, a full license plate number is required. Residents tell me this creates a barrier for reporting their concerns to the police.”
Another way to help to tackle this issue is by the use of Speed Indicator Devices (SID). These are the devices that flash the actual speed back at the driver, sometimes seen with a smiley face. Keir is calling for Parish Councils, like Bersted Parish Council and Bognor Regis Town Council to consider purchasing these devices. Bersted Parish Council have committed to purchasing a device and Keir is calling on Bognor Regis Town Council to do the same.
Councillor Keir Greenway says “Speed Indicator Devices are a cost effective way that Parish Councils can incentivise drivers to reduce their speeds. An example being Lindfield Parish Council, who have a mobile device and publish the data collected, which can be passed onto the authorities. I’m currently working with Bognor Regis Town Council and residents to put together a proposal for Town Councillors to consider.”
