Dog owners in the South are being asked to take greater care in the countryside as dog attacks on livestock surge by nearly 25%.
The National Farmers Union reports that last year in the South East, dogs were responsible for killing or seriously injuring livestock valued at over £100,000.
Tips for dog owners:
- Keep Dogs on a Lead – Always use a lead when walking near livestock, even if your dog is well-trained.
- Train and Socialize Dogs – Proper training can reduce the risk of a dog chasing or attacking animals.
- Secure Gardens and Homes – Ensure dogs cannot escape onto farmland.
- Be Aware of Local Farming Areas – Stick to marked footpaths and keep dogs under control when near fields with animals.
- Avoid Walking Through Fields with Livestock – If possible, choose alternative routes, especially during lambing season.
