East Surrey Hospital, serving the Crawley and Gatwick areas, is advising the public to avoid visiting unless there is an urgent clinical need.
This caution is in response to a rise in norovirus cases within the community.
Norovirus, a highly contagious virus, is the predominant cause of gastroenteritis globally and spreads rapidly through contact with contaminated food, water, surfaces, and direct contact with infected individuals. Symptoms are often severe and include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and occasionally fever. This virus thrives in closed settings such as hospitals, schools, and cruise ships, posing a significant risk to young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Due to its contagious nature, the hospital has decided to limit visitors to specific wards to prevent further spread.
While there is no targeted treatment for norovirus, maintaining hydration is critical. Preventative measures, including stringent hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing and thorough surface disinfection, are vital to controlling the outbreak.
