The council is giving out the best tips and advice for local residents wanting to re-roof their homes.

Horsham District Council is giving out advice and guidance for residents in the area who are embarking on re-roofing projects.

When re-doing 50 percent or more of the roof of your house before carrying out the work you will need the approval of the Councils Building Control Team.

Work includes any type of  changing insulation or ventilation, you will still need approval.

Without the correct council approval when you go to sell your home it may not met the certificates of compliance, which will be necessary to sell the home.

You can apply to us for Building Regulations approval to on the Horsham District Council website.

Or you can use a roofing contractor registered with the National Federation of Roofing Contractors Ltd (NFRC).

Roofing contractors that are members of the NFRC’s ‘Competent Roofer’ scheme can self-certify their own work.

If you’re re-covering or carrying out repairs to less than 50 percent of your roof, it’s unlikely that you will need to inform the council.

Consent is not normally required as long as no changes are made to the structure of the roof.

However if you are unsure it is recommended to check with the council first or your local authority Building Control Team.

Depending on the specifics of the reroofing project, other permissions and approvals may also be required. For example, if bats are living in the roof, a protected species survey may need to be carried out, and a license to do the work may be required.

More guidance is listed on the councils website.
