A sign saying "do not enter the sea" was spotted by residents

Arun District Council have confirmed that Felpham beach has been closed off to swimmers as a "precautionary response".

Residents spotted a sign reading "do not enter the sea" and "no bathing or paddling until further notice". Similar signs have also been seen in Middleton and Bognor as Southern Water continue to deal with a burst sewer pipe in the Yapton Road area.

A spokesperson for Arun District council said: "The signs along the foreshores are a precautionary response to the incident being dealt with by Southern Water.

"We are working with Southern Water, who are making every effort to resolve the matter as soon as possible."

On their website, Southern Water reaffirmed that "repairs are ongoing and specialist teams have been working round the clock to minimise any impact of this flooding on the environment".

"The tankers are safely removing wastewater from the network  and from the flooded field for treatment at our sites.

“We continue to work closely with the local authority and Environment Agency, while the pipe is fixed and the clean-up completed. We are very sorry for any distress caused.”
