Huge budget cuts for Sussex town

Eastbourne Borough Councillors have voted through major spending cuts

Councillors at Eastbourne Borough Council voted through major spending cuts last night, to try to save another £2.7 million and prevent bankruptcy. It means the immediate closure of the Beachy Head story heritage centre and a big slash in funding for the famous Towner Gallery.

The Borough Council says about half of its revenue from council tax is now spent on measures such as temporary accommodation.

With more cuts possibly on the way which could see a reduction in event and seafront services and a consultation will take place on closing all public toilets, cutting street cleaning and increasing parking charges.

The Leader of the Borough Council has slammed the former Tory government. Stephen Holt says they ignored the scale of the homelessness crisis and left ‘public services on life support’.
