The announcement was made by the Littlehampton Bonfire Society Limited at around 1:30pm today (28th October 2023).
The statement went on to say that their 2023 torchlight parade, bonfire and fireworks has been cancelled and that they are "devastated and sorry for any inconvenience caused".
In an earlier statement this morning the organisers of the annual event in the town usually attended by thousands of people had hoped despite the changing forecast and predicted strong winds that the event could go still ahead.
One member of the public took to social media to express their total understanding of the decision, writing "So sorry after everyone's hard work planning the event, recruiting volunteers, building the bonfire and organising the fireworks and parade. However it's totally understandable as the weather forecast is pretty dire. Gutted for you all".
Another wrote "That’s a shame, was looking forward to it. But in the interest of public safety with such high winds forecast it’s for the best to keep everyone safe. Hope the weather behaves next year."
