From the 1st of June it will be illegal to carry e-scooters or e-skateboards on several Sussex trainlines and stations.
Starting from Thursday 1st of June, rail networks across Sussex have announced the ban of e-scooters and e-skateboards aboard all their trains and in their stations.
Southern, Southeastern, and Gatwick Express announced the decision yesterday, joining rail companies across the UK who have already made the move.
The ban follows safety concerns over the lithium-ion batteries which are used in the products and the potential danger this could pose to the public.
Head of Safety and Environment at Southeastern said:
“Although the likelihood of a fire incident is low, the risk of fire from e-scooters is much higher than other modes of transport, because of their design.”
“Because it’s impossible for our colleagues at stations and on board our trains to check whether an e-scooter is safe or not, we have to think of everyone’s safety, and so we can’t allow them on our trains. It’s just not a risk we’re prepared to take.”
The decision follows other rail companies including Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, and London North Eastern.
Customers carrying e-scooters or e-skateboards will be refused travel.
