Major disparity in special needs education in Sussex

Recent statistics reveal a significant disparity in the support for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in Sussex.

In West Sussex, only 3.6% of SEN care plans are finalised within the 20-week target period. In contrast, neighbouring Brighton and East Sussex demonstrate much better outcomes, with approval rates of 80% and 87%, respectively.

These findings, released by Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, highlight a crisis in SEN support across the region.

SEN in England encompasses learning difficulties or disabilities that impede a child’s ability to learn compared to peers. Children with SEN often need tailored support, which can range from minor teaching adjustments to comprehensive interventions involving specialists and personalised education programs.

The 2014 Children and Families Act underpins this provision, stressing early detection, parental involvement, and the coordination of educational, health, and social services to optimise each child’s developmental trajectory.
