Plans to build a block of nine flats in Marine Place are to be considered by Worthing Borough Council.

The application from Star Property Investment and Management Ltd will be discussed during a meeting of the planning committee on Wednesday (February 22). Planning officers have recommended it for approval and ff the committee agrees, the storage buildings currently on the site will be demolished to make way for the three-storey block.

As well as the nine flats, the development includes additional studio/office space at the lower ground-floor level. The council received objections from neighbours raising concerns about the new building’s impact on their privacy. Comments from The Worthing Society described the proposed building as ‘rather bland’, with concerns that it could bring ‘a sense of enclosure’ to neighbouring Grade II Listed Bedford Row.
The Society added: “This part of the South Street Conservation Area has become rather run-down in recent years and (we) would have preferred two-storey town houses rather than a three-storey block to better complement existing buildings and lessen the effect on neighbours.”

Also in Worthing, plans to build four homes behind two Victorian villas are to be considered by the borough council. The application for land behind 14-16 Farncombe Road will be decided by the planning committee, however in a report to the committee, officers said the design, size and siting of the new two-bedroom homes made for an ‘anomalous and awkward form of development’. They also felt the application, from Patagonia Properties Ltd represented ‘piecemeal, backland development which would be a discordant over-development of the site’. The council has received one letter of objection from a neighbour in Selden Road.
