Local charities are highlighting the signs of heatstroke in pets and urging people to be more vigilant during the period of hot weather.

Sussex pet owners are being warned of the dangers of looking after their dogs during the warm weather.

With high temperatures set to continue into next week, Dogs Trust are advising people to stick to the ‘twenty is plenty’ guidance when exercising their dogs.

The advice highlights that any temperature above 20 degrees can be problematic for dogs, particularly ‘flat-faced’ breeds such as English Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs.

The charity wants to remind pet owners to be vigilant even in non-extreme temperatures, ensuring their animals do not suffer with heatstroke.
Paula Boyden, Veterinary Director of Dogs Trust, says:

“There are so many things we can do to make sure our dogs stay happy and healthy in hot weather, but it is crucial we keep a close eye on them, even if we are playing indoors. That way, hopefully we and our dogs will be able to enjoy a long hot summer.”

The Dogs Trust have released a series of advice for owners to follow over the summer months.

This includes information such as avoiding walking in the hottest times of the day, ensuring your dog has enough water, testing the tarmac with your hand, and making sure pets are not left alone in the car.

The RSPCA have also reminded people to take extra care of their animals.

They highlighted the signs of heatstroke including excessive panting, difficulty breathing, unusual tiredness, or a change in a pet’s behaviour.

Lucy Cooper, from the charity, explained the importance of looking out for the signs of heatstroke.

“Prevention is always better than cure, and we say absolutely in this hot weather do everything you can do to make sure your animal is as cool and comfortable as possible.”

The RSPCA recommend that if your pet is suffering with symptoms of heatstroke to stop the animal from exercising, move them into the shade, give them cool water, and contact your vet for further advice.
