Keep Britain Tidy has praised litter-pickers across the South who pledged to collect over 59-thousand bags of litter during its 10th Great British Spring Clean.
Meanwhile, the charity, which is the leading organisation in the country campaigning against litter, has announced that volunteer Donna Tretheway, who founded the Selsey Beach Litter Ninjas in 2023, has scooped a Great British Spring Clean award.
Keen sea swimmer Donna won the individual Litter Legend category after the charity heard how each month, after tirelessly clearing local beaches, the group votes for an interesting or peculiar item of litter that was collected and the winning ‘ninja collector’ can choose a charity to receive a small donation, which Donna funds personally.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said: “Thanks to people-power we are celebrating the 10th anniversary year of the Great British Spring Clean and it’s clear that the impact has been huge.
“These impressive figures prove that when we take simple actions to show our love for where we live, we become part of a collective of like-minded people with an unstoppable drive to protect the environment.
“We are truly in awe of the efforts of our supporters and volunteers across communities, schools, voluntary organisations, businesses and local authorities.”
