Southern Water customers could face sharp rise in bills

The company proposes an 84% increase between now and 2030, which is higher than its initial request earlier this year.

If approved, the proposed price hike would increase the average household bill from £420 to £772.

A final decision on the proposed increases is expected in December.

Responding to the price hike proposal, Stuart Ledger, Southern Water’s Chief Financial Officer, said, "We understand that our proposed bill rise is among the highest in percentage terms, which may cause concern among some of our customers. However, we are taking this approach in response to what our communities have told us they want us to deliver. Our bills have historically been at the lower end of the industry and have not changed in sterling terms since 2014."
