Ceremony celebrates Sussex's outstanding carers crowned in V2 Radio's Artius Care care awards

Carers from 6 categories, nominated by the people they look after and others who admire the work they do, received a trophy, a bouquet of flowers, and a voucher for a massage

Sussex carers whose outstanding work saw them praised in V2 Radio's Artius Care Care Awards have attended a ceremony to present their accolades.

Carers from 6 categories, nominated by the people they look after and others who admire the work they do, received a trophy, a bouquet of flowers, a voucher for a massage, and were treated to a selection of sandwiches and treats as they heard each other's stories at Graylingwell Chapel earlier today (29th June).

One of them is 16-year-old Keira Houghton, who has balanced her GCSEs with caring for her grandad, who has stage 4 cancer.

She won the Unpaid Carer Award through her dedication to visiting him before and after school to help him with food, care needs and housework.

For Keira, this care comes naturally, as she tells V2 Radio: "It just feels normal because I feel like that was something I owed him to do, seeing as he's been there for me my whole life. I just felt like that was something I needed to do."

Also at the awards was Clare Poyser who won Care Home Carer for supporting colleagues and residents alike, who said: "I'm still in disbelief really, because I just do what I do.

"I can't believe I've been nominated. I'm really, really blessed and blown away by it all,  really."

Her manager Erin told us why Clare deserved the accolade: "It's thoroughly deserved.

"She is the most amazing carer, she goes above and beyond every single day.

"Nothing is too much of an ask for her, she is just naturally a beautiful, kind person. I couldn't think of any one better to nominate than Clare.

Joining them both was St Richards' Orthopaedic Surgical OT Team, who won NHS Team, Carer's Carer Tania Stubbington and Michelle Hedgcock, who was 'overall winner' for 'always going the extra mile'.
