The Chichester pub crowned the best in West Sussex that could also be the greatest in Britain

The Hornet Alehouse is in for a chance to become Britain's "pub of the year"

A Chichester pub has crowned the best in Sussex and Surrey is also in the running for becoming Britain's best pub.

The Hornet Alehouse was announced as the top in West Sussex and is now set to compete against 16 other pubs across the country in a chance to win the title of Pub of the Year.

Pubs were judged based on their "atmosphere, decor, welcome, service, inclusivity and impression", alongside the quality of the beers they serve.

The Hornet Alehouse was praised for it's "friendly and knowledgeable" staff, availability of tasters and Meet the Brewer events, where pub-goers can get to know those who are making their beer and their history. The pub also received its title for its quiz nights and board games, even being described as a "mecca" for it's selection of ales.

National coordinator of the Pub of the Year competition Andrea Briers congratulated the finalists for being "shining examples of pub excellence" despite the challenges of crises such as the Coronavirus outbreak and cost-of-living.

Briers urged residents to "go out and support their local."

She continued, "Seek out these fantastic pubs in your area – they really are the cream of the crop and uphold the very highest standards of what makes a great pub.”

The winner of the Pub of the Year competition will be announced on the 30th of November.
