The spend will allow the building of the Terminus Road car park to go ahead earlier than thought

Chichester council is to spend £20,000 on bringing forward car park plans in a move that is hoped to meet "unmet needs" in the city.

The council is releasing funds from reserves to fund the space that will provide parking for 138 cars on a patch of land next to the Fishbourne roundabout. Funding will be used to illustrate a final design as well as prepare and submit a planning application - with leftovers used to pay a company to complete building work.

Cabinet member for growth, place and regeneration Tony Dignum praised the project as delivering an "unmet need for parking". However, Chichester's Green party member, Sarah Sharp, questioned why plans were being put in place when the council were aiming for a 10% reduction in carbon emissions each year.

Dignum continued to describe the council's corporate plans as "a bit like the Bible - you can find quotes from it which will back any case you make."

The carpark is hoped to help in the council's aims to attract new businesses, support regeneration opportunities and as well as deliver the appropriate infrastructure.
