V2 Radio smashes bra appeal donation target as grand total revealed in final count

Each tonne of bras collected raises £700 for breast cancer research

V2 Radio have smashed their target for bra donations as their annual appeal comes to a close for the third year.

9441 bras were gathered in total, all which will now be recycled into textiles and funds for Against Breast Cancer. Each tonne collected for the charity equates to £700 in funding for research before being shipped to countries such as Ghana and Kenya to be used by small businesses who struggle to produce them locally due to extortionate costs.

The figure is almost triple that raised in V2 Radio's first year, and nearly doubles the 5,426 collected during last year's campaign - the number the station was hoping to beat.

Station presenters Ian Crouch and Tanya McCarthy were greeted by applause as they announced the total at Bersted Park Community Centre.

Ian said: "We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who's donated a bra - whether you've donated one, or you've donated 20 or you've donated 100.

"It really does make a huge difference."

Also at the count was Leah McGarvey from campaign sponsor Lewis Brownlee Chartered Accountants, who described the amount of bras collected as "amazing".

"We found it great that there was something people could donate to without having to pay any money out of their own pocket, it's something they've got in their drawers, so anyone can get involved."
