West Sussex man to be awarded with a British Citizen Award recognising his work in the community

Tyler Murphy founded 'Tyler's Trust' which provides children with life-threatening conditions with items to make them smile.

A West Sussex man is set to be awarded a British Citizen Award, after being recognised by the Palace of Westminster for his exceptional impact on communities across the country.

Tyler Murphy set up ‘Tyler’s Trust’ after suffering with a brain tumour and stroke at the age of 12, that meant he had to fight to regain his mobility.

During his recovery he spent a large amount of time with many young people suffering from complex medical conditions, where he found the motivation to set up the trust.

When leaving the rehabilitation home where Tyler was staying, he handed out comics and toys to other children in the centre, an act which inspired his choice to set up the trust.

Tyler’s Trust offers children who are under-going treatment for a brain tumour or life-threatening condition with a balloon and box of goodies, hoping to bring them some joy during difficult times.

The items include a teddy bear, bandana, mug, journal, pens, sweets, and voucher, each personalised to make every child feel special.

This offer is also extended out to siblings and has recently grown to include parents and local hospitals, providing hygiene items, magazines, and refreshments.

Tyler is one of 26 people to be presented with the prestigious award for Volunteer and Charitable Giving, as well as receiving the BCA Medal of Honour.

Stephanie Wood from the BCA sponsor, One Stop, told us about how important the award is:

“This year’s medallists have reminded us of how many amazing people are supporting our communities, especially during such a challenging time.”

“We are proud to be partnering with the BCA again and to play a small part in helping each medallist to be recognised.”

Tyler will receive the award at the Palace of Westminster on 29th June 2023.
