West Sussex's elderly and vulnerable to receive welfare checks with meal delivery

The scheme is part of new partnership which will last at least five years

West Sussex's elderly and vulnerable population will receive welfare checks alongside their meal delivery as part of a new scheme set to begin in October.

Those receiving food deliveries from West Sussex County Council's 'Meals on Wheels' service will now have their food delivered by the county's Health and Independent Living Support team. As well as offering a welfare check, the teams will also provide company to residents who may not have any other visitors.

Food delivered will be from Apetito, which offers over 200 different meal options.

Speaking on the partnership, the brand's Chief Commercial Officer Ian Stone said: “This is a perfect combination of specialist partners adding real value to the meals on wheels provision."

Cabinet Member for Adults' Services Amanda Jupp added: “It helps many people continue to live independently in their own homes.

"[It] provides the peace of mind that they will receive regular visits that not only offer hot and nutritious meals, but also a friendly face, company and someone to check they are safe and well.

"It’s a service which really does offer more than just a meal.”
