Women in Sussex politics get a boost

Councillor Sophie Cox has been elected as the new leader of Worthing Borough Council.

She succeeds Dr Beccy Cooper, who stood down as a councillor earlier this month following her election as the new MP for Worthing West.

Cllr Cox, who represents Castle Ward, was previously the deputy leader of the council. She named Cllr Rita Garner as the new deputy leader at the meeting of the full council at Worthing Town Hall tonight (23/7/24).

Meanwhile, Sussex Weald MP - Nusrat Ghani - has been elected as one of three deputy Speakers in the House of Commons... all of them women for the first time.
