Worthing environmental charity shares how to help the fight against climate change from home

WorthingCAN have also warned of a "nature emergency" in the "depleted" UK

A Worthing environmental charity have shared how you can help the fight against climate change at home.

WorthingCAN, also known as Worthing Climate Action Network, have shared crucial advice on small changes you can make to help fight against the climate emergency - and have also highlighted concerns about a 'nature emergency', too.

Emma Cameron, who is part of the group, says: "The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries on the planet.

"We have been working with Worthing and West Sussex councils on rewilding projects, such as the community Road Verge scheme."

She elaborates that the scheme allows "particular verges" to grow long over the summer "in order to encourage wildflowers and pollinators."

However, fighting against the nature and climate emergency is not just the responsibility of the council: "We believe that being part of the climate movement is for us all, there is a role for everyone," Emma adds.

Within this, she elaborates that "Local people can really help nature by leaving areas of their garden a bit wilder, cutting their lawns less and never using herbicides and pesticides."

The group are part of Worthing's "Climate Resilience Centre", and also plan to open up a Climate Emergency Centre in South Street. Emma describes the space as a "local community hub, a place to become involved, find out what you can do, with info, events, talks about the climate and nature emergency".

Emma shares the main lifestyle changes that can help fight against climate change, including "reducing/stopping flying, eating less meat and dairy and reducing their car use."

But she admits that issues with local public transport may act as a barrier for these swaps.

"Locally we need much better public transport, along with better access for cycling and walking, to reduce air pollution and bring down emissions.

"We need more trees, wilder areas in parks and green spaces."

Emma also pushes for "affordable community energy schemes", home insulation, the provision of heat pumps and the need to "reduce dependence on gas central heating."

West Sussex Council announced last month that homeowners could receive up to £25,000 to improve their house's energy efficiency.
