Worthing residents to give feedback on plans to cut council tax

People in Worthing will be given the opportunity to offer their feedback on plans to scrap council tax for those facing the most financial difficulty.

A minimum charge of £5 a week, the equivalent of £260.71 a year is in place for all residents of working-age.

However, the new administration at Worthing Borough Council want to remove the minimum charge.

Worthing Borough Council Leader, Cllr Dr Beccy Cooper, said: "With the cost of living crisis, we are all experiencing some very tough financial times at the moment and we believe it is essential to support those most in need.

"A saving of £20 per month would make a massive difference to those struggling to heat their homes and feed their families.

"We want to hear the views of the public on whether there should a minimum payment set at a lower rate, or whether people think the rules for determining the level of council tax support for working aged residents should be the same as the rules for pensioners, meaning those on the very lowest income would be exempt."

The proposed scheme would end the need for the Council's discretionary fund - which helps low income residents who currently have to pay the minimum £5 charge.

The Council say the £33,900 saving by ending the fund would offset the loss of income for the Council. The net cost would likely be around £141,000 in 2023/24.

The proposed changes would come into place from 1st April 2023.

The scheme will be discussed by Worthing's Joint Strategic Sub-Committee at a meeting tomorrow (6th September).
