The plans are hoped to "make a valuable contribution" to Worthing's "housing need"

Worthing's former Topshop store could be converted into new homes and two shops in a bid to contribute to the "borough's severe housing need".

Plans have been submitted to transform the Bath Place store into nine flats with one and two bedrooms with shops beneath them, although it is not yet known who will own the stores. The apartments would take advantage of unused storage space and extend the building upwards to accommodate the conversion.

The proposals, which are said to be "sensitively designed" to consider the South Street Conservation area, do not involve a new parking area, but have room for cycle spaces.

A design statement for the area considers the potential development as "effective and efficient".

It reads: "The loss of existing employment and storage floorspace to create nine residential flats is considered to be an effective and efficient use of floorspace.

"The commercial units would create manageable and viable commercial units, and have already been considered acceptable."
